[ CLIO INTEGRATION ]

Get more out of the Clio you already run

Clio stays your system of record. We build the automation and AI on top of it that Clio doesn't include: intake that opens the matter for you, documents drafted from the matter for an attorney to review, and answers pulled straight from your own files. Privilege stays protected, and your firm owns everything we build.

[ WHAT WE BUILD ]

What becomes possible on top of Clio

Clio runs your matters, contacts, calendar, and billing. Here is the work it can start doing for you once AI and automation sit on top, all built around how your firm actually runs, and all owned by you.

Ask questions across your matters

Ask about any matter and get an answer drawn from your own Clio files, contacts, and documents. No digging through folders, no re-uploading files. Built on our open-source Clio connector.

Intake that opens the matter for you

A new client comes in and Clio opens the matter with contacts, key dates, and fields already filled in. New-matter setup goes from a manual checklist to minutes, and it plugs into the intake forms and lead sources you already use.

Documents drafted for your review

Engagement letters, retainers, and routine documents written from the matter and your own templates. The AI writes the first draft; an attorney reviews and approves before anything reaches a client.

Connect Clio to your other tools

Clio talks to your accounting, e-signature, lead sources, and document storage, so the same information stops getting typed in twice. Your data stays on your own systems.

Fewer missed deadlines, less lost time

Key dates kept in sync across your calendar, time captured from the work you are already doing, and billing that catches what usually slips through. Every step is logged and attorney-approved.

Keep everything in-house, if you need to

For firms whose confidentiality rules out any third-party AI, we run the model on your own systems so nothing leaves the firm. Works with any AI, not only Claude. Read the Privilege Stack guide.

[ THE PROBLEM ]

Clio runs the firm. The AI layer is on you.

Clio is the system of record for most US law firms. The integrations and AI on top of it are yours to build, and most attempts fail in three predictable ways.

01

Automations that don't last

  • Quick scripts and no-code glue break the next time something changes
  • Undocumented automations disappear when the person who set them up leaves
  • You end up paying to rebuild the same workflow more than once

02

The work Clio leaves to you

  • Clio stores your matters, but doesn't draft documents or run intake for you
  • No built-in way to put AI to work on your own files
  • So the team copies between AI and Clio by hand, which means duplicate entry and missed dates

03

Privilege at risk

  • A 2026 federal ruling: anything typed into public AI is not privileged
  • Pasting matter notes into ChatGPT can waive privilege
  • Consumer Claude and ChatGPT give no confidentiality guarantee

[ PROCESS ]

How it works

Start free or start small. Two clear entry points, no open-ended billing.

1. Free Discovery

A 30-minute call with a co-founder. We map how your firm runs on Clio, find the 3-5 highest-impact automations, and give you a draft scope and rough quote. No charge, no obligation.

2. Guided Setup

The fastest entry point: we deploy the Clio + Claude connector into production for your firm in 2 weeks, configured and audit-logged. See the Guided MCP Setup.

3. Custom Build

Document automation, intake routing, custom agents, full compliance architecture. 4-6 weeks plus embedded support during rollout. Fixed price from the discovery scope. You own the source.

[ WHAT WE'VE SHIPPED ]

Proof, not just a pitch

Most agencies ask you to trust a sales call. We publish our Clio integration code so anyone can check it before paying us, and we have shipped compliance-critical software in regulated fields where it has to pass an audit.

[ COMPLIANCE ]

ABA Opinion 512 compliant

Every Clio workflow we build is designed to meet the ABA's AI ethics requirements from the start.

Verification Layer

AI-generated documents, letters, and summaries require attorney review before any client-facing use. No automated output bypasses human judgment.

Append-Only Audit Trails

Every AI interaction logged: prompt, response, source documents, model version, timestamps, and reviewer identity. Append-only. Court-defensible.

Privilege Protection

Enterprise-tier AI only. Training disabled, Zero Data Retention. Reached through the Clio API, not the chat window. Not used for training, not stored after the response.

[ FAQ ]

Clio + AI: common questions

Yes. Clio exposes a REST API plus webhooks covering matters, contacts, documents, tasks, calendar, time entries, notes, and billing. That's the foundation for custom integrations, data syncs, and automations on top of Clio.

We build directly against the Clio API rather than relying on off-the-shelf connectors, so the integration matches your firm's actual workflow. You can read our open-source Clio integration code before you hire us.

Yes, and we already shipped the open-source connector that does it. Our Clio MCP server (@oktopeak/clio-mcp on npm, also on Anthropic's MCP Registry) gives Claude 26 tools across matters, contacts, documents, tasks, calendar, time entries, notes, and billing. It runs locally, your Clio credentials never leave your machine, tokens are encrypted at rest, and every call is logged append-only for ABA Opinion 512.

On top of that free connector we build custom workflows: intake-to-matter automation, document drafting, deadline sync, and billing capture.

Clio stays your system of record, and the integrations, AI workflows, and automations we build on top of it are yours: full source code, documentation, and a deployment runbook, with no lock-in and no per-seat fee on the custom layer.

The custom layer you commission from us is an asset your firm owns outright, alongside the Clio platform you already run.

No. A 2026 federal court ruling found that information entered into public AI platforms is not protected by attorney-client privilege. Pasting matter notes, client communications, or documents into consumer ChatGPT or Claude can waive privilege.

We build on enterprise-tier AI with training disabled and Zero Data Retention, reach Clio through its API rather than the chat window, and implement audit trails that satisfy ABA Opinion 512. Content is still processed by Claude, but under those terms it is not used for training or stored after the response. See our breakdown of the privilege ruling.

Common Clio automations: intake-to-matter creation with fields pre-populated, document and letter drafting from matter data, calendar and deadline sync, time-entry and billing capture from activity, matter-scoped Claude projects that draft work from a single matter's data, and data syncs between Clio and your other systems (e-sign, accounting, lead sources).

Every AI-generated output is flagged for attorney review before client-facing use.

It depends on scope. A single automation is a small, fixed engagement; a full custom build with document automation, intake routing, and compliance architecture is a larger one. A firm-wide connector deployment — one server, every attorney signed in as themselves, one audit log — is scoped the same way. We don't put a number on it until we understand what your firm actually needs.

Discovery is free. After a 30-minute call we send a fixed-price proposal within five business days, so you see the whole cost up front, with no per-seat fees on anything we build for you. Book a 30-minute call.

And if you're weighing an integration bill against what Clio itself costs your firm, here is the three-year math.

The Guided Setup of the Clio + Claude connector is a 2-week engagement. Custom builds run 4-6 weeks for the build phase plus embedded support during rollout, because AI workflows fail without structured implementation support.

We give you a real timeline in the free discovery call.

No. Clio stays your system of record. We build integrations, AI workflows, and automations on top of it through the Clio API. No migration, no data export, no disruption to your matters. The work layers onto the platform you already run.

Yes, that's the point of connecting Claude to Clio through the API instead of the chat window. The connector lets Claude find and list the documents in a matter, so your team stops downloading and re-uploading files by hand.

Reading a document's full content into Claude (a scanned medical record, say) adds a fetch-and-extract step we build on top of the connector: the connector locates the records, the workflow turns them into text Claude can use. See how the document workflow works.

Yes, as a built workflow rather than a one-click feature. The connector pulls the records from the matter, then a pipeline extracts the text, runs it through Claude with a consistent prompt, and writes the chronology, deposition summary, or paid-versus-incurred analysis back to Clio for attorney review.

A single chronology can take 15 to 80 hours by hand. Read the breakdown.

Yes, and it's public. We built and open-sourced the Clio MCP connector (@oktopeak/clio-mcp), one of the first MCP servers connecting Claude to live Clio data, published to npm and Anthropic's MCP Registry. You can read every line of our Clio integration code before you talk to us.

Integrating vertical legal SaaS APIs is our core work: we shipped the same for MyCase, and we build privilege-safe, ABA 512 audit-logged workflows on top.

Yes. For firms whose confidentiality requirements rule out third-party AI processors, we deploy models that run on your own infrastructure so nothing leaves the firm. The same privilege-safe Clio integration pattern works with on-prem or self-hosted models, not just hosted Claude. Read the Privilege Stack guide.
